Programming Instructions:
Unfortunately, this car cannot be programmed without a scanner. To have your keyless entry fob’s programmed you will have to visit either the dealership or an automotive locksmith.
I recommend checking out the automotive locksmith first as they can be faster and less expensive than the dealer route.
NOTE: call ahead to make sure they can do it for your make/model/year
NOTE: no matter where you go, make sure you take all your remote entry key fobs with you (even the working ones) because they all have to be done at once.

Hi Mike, I just checked and unfortunately, you are correct, I have these instructions up here and they don’t work for the HHR. The bad news is that the HHR is one of those vehicles that you can’t program yourself. Your options are either a Dealer or a Locksmith (and automobile locksmith that is). I personally recommend a car locksmith (call them first to confirm they can do it) as they are typically faster and cheaper – just remember to take ALL your fobs with you no matter where you go, not just the one(s) that aren’t currently programmed.
I have updated this post to show the appropriate message as well.

yes you can, but it takes TWO KEYS. its complicated, might try a jumper in #4 and 8 slots at the scanner port too
Larry says
do you mean you jump together slots 4 and 8 on the scanner port? What is the second key for?

You cannot program the key fob yourself. A spare key (up to 10) you can do.
I purchased a complete FOB online that included the guys and a battery for $17.50 tax and shipping total + dealer charged $ 39.99 or $60 in total for a new, programmed, 4 button key Fob for my 2006 Chevy HHR .
Remember to buy the exact one for your model. Check your GM #. Mine was 15114374 & the site you buy from should be asking you for your model, year etc. April/2016

I haven’t successfully programmed mine yet but there are programming modes on 2006 HHR. Someone posted this online. First get in, unlock all ur doors. Then turn the key on without cranking it. You hit the info button and the arrow button at the same time to enter reset mode. Then scroll the information button until u see language: english on ur dash. Then hit the reset + button down for 30 seconds. The press both lock and unlock buttons on the remote. U will hear clicking several times then the locks unlock followed by two horn beeps. Dont let up yet. Hold those buttons down longer until it locks the doors followed by the two horn beeps. My problem, i wasnt holding the buttons down long enough. It has to cycle all the way through to lock and unlock. It took a good while of holding the buttons down. If u dont get the first time wait tens minutes before trying the reprogram again. Took me several tries but by george i did it. Of course this is the same key fob ive always used. Once u change the battery after its been dead so long, u have to use the reset method. I have found that if you press info and arrow button at same time, then let go you will see English..if you continue pressing info it will continue showing options for door locks horn and auto start.
