Programming Instructions:
Note: You will need a Scanner to program the 2009 Chevy HHR key fob. If you do not have access to a scan tool, you will need to take your vehicle and ALL keys to a Chevy Dealer who will program it for you at an approximate cost of a half hour of shop time or to an automotive locksmith.
If you have access to a scan tool, then the instructions are as follows:
Important Notes:
- Up to 4 transmitters can be programmed.
- Do not operate or program the transmitters in the vicinity of other vehicles that are in the keyless entry program mode. This prevents the programming of the transmitters to the incorrect vehicle.
- The order in which the transmitters are programmed is important. The first transmitter programmed will be transmitter #1, and the second transmitter programmed will be transmitter #2.
- Use care to program the transmitters correctly.
- The scan tool must stay connected until all of the transmitters are programmed.
This procedure will erase all keyless entry transmitters from memory.
- Install a scan tool.
- Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
- With the scan tool, select Body.
- Select Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR).
- Select Module Setup.
- Select Program Key Fobs.
- Select Invalidate All.
- Follow the scan tool on screen instructions.
Next Available Slot
Incremental programming allows for a transmitter to be programmed into the next available location without affecting the currently programmed transmitters. Previously programmed transmitters will not be erased during this procedure.
Important: If all 4 slots are programmed, the Invalidate All procedure will need to be performed to allow transmitter programming.
- Install a scan tool.
- Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
- With the scan tool, select Body.
- Select Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR).
- Select Module Setup.
- Select Program Key Fobs.
- Select Next Available Slot.
- Follow the scan tool on screen instructions.
- Remove the scan tool.
- Exit the vehicle. Operate all functions on transmitters to verify correct system operation.
Transmitter Slot Programming
Transmitter slot programming allows a single transmitter to be programmed into a specific slot without affecting any of the other programmed transmitters. By using slot programming, the transmitter originally programmed to a specific slot is erased and the new transmitter learned in its placed.
- Install a scan tool.
- Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
- With the scan tool, select Body.
- Select Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR).
- Select Module Setup.
- Select Program Key Fobs.
- Select the key fob desired to be programmed.
- Follow the scan tool on screen instructions.
- Remove the scan tool.
- Exit the vehicle. Operate all functions on transmitters to verify correct system operation

The Remote Guy says
Hi Kirk, I read the factory manual on this model year and unfortunately, you can only program it with a scanner. The programming instructions from this page have evidently changed on newer models (While manufacturers use the same methodology for many years running, they do change the system from time to time). My apologies, in the meantime, you will have to go to a dealer who will charge you something like a half hour of shop time or you can try to find an auto locksmith that will do this for you – it may be quicker, but I am finding dealers a lot better to deal with these days than in the past – your mileage may vary!

Fyi to those looking, our local chevy dealership wanted to charge $90 JUST for to program the remote (that’s NOT even including the key fob remote cost itself!); so I heard that Autozone had the
remote key fobs. When I went to our local Autozone, I found out that they literally sell the key fob remote(s) + this little black/yellow box thingie with the instructions on it that comes in the package kit, which the Sales guy said you plug into your car’s dashboard, and it programs the remote for you, ALL FOR $65.99 USD! Yeah, I was suitibly impressed and if I can not locate another cheaper programming option, I will go right back to Autozone and buy one. However, I am still looking as the keyless remote key fobs sell for between $10-$30, so even at $66 the Autozone option still seems high. Fyi, Amazon now sells the keyless remote key fobs, and they also sell all manner of scanners! I just happen to be hesitant about buying & trying one as they range in cost from anywhere between $10-$500+ and I am not the most technically inclined person on the planet. Quite the opposite “hardware” and electronics typically hate me and somehow break (don’t ask!)
Anyhow, I hope this information helps others who visit here after me, and I wish you all GOOD LUCK!
