Learn to program the remote in your 2005 Volkswagen Jetta. This is also called the VW Jetta.
Programming Instructions:
Insert your key into the ignition and turn it to “On” without cranking. Open the driver’s side door. Put your spare key in the driver’s door slot and turn it to “Unlock.” Hold it in the position until you hear three beeps. This takes up to 20 seconds. Release the key but leave it in the door slot.
Push “Lock” or “Unlock” on the key remote fob. Turn the spare key in the door to the left, and then release it. Remove it, and then turn off the ignition key and remove it. Test the remote.

Thank you. This is much clearer than the owner’s manual. But which key is “key?” Which is “spare key?” And which of those two is the “remote fob?” I guess, the real question is “Am I programming the key or the spare key? And which has the remote fob”?

Hi Ron, what these instructions are saying is that to succesfully program a new remote control, you need TWO keys that already work (ie, can open the door mechanically by inserting into the door and that are already paired to the anti-theft system)
I read these again and they definitely could be improved, I will work on it. In the meantime, suffice it to say that you will need two keys that can mechanically unlock the door and turn in the ignition. I think you can then program the ‘button’ part of either key or a different key.
Sorry this is a long winded explanation 🙂 Does it help at all?
