Programming Instructions:
Note: This is the same for many GM vehicles.
Sit in the car’s driver’s seat. Insert the key and turn it ON. Push the INFORMATION button on the information center until the display reads PRESS TO RELEARN KEYS. Push the CHECK button. Push and hold LOCK and UNLOCK on the remote. Wait about 15 seconds or so. You’ll hear the horn chirp. The remote is programmed. Repeat for the additional remotes you need to program; you can program up to 8.

This info is false, this is for a Impala. Malibus do not have a check button nor a “Press to relearn keys” option. The info center only shows odometer, tire pressure, coolant temp, and oil life.

It didn’t work either. Also there is no relearn feature in the display. Also tried you tube video of turning ignition on/off 5 times, hitting unlock button for door, and then holding lock/unlock buttons on remote. That didn’t work either. A lot of companies that sell remotes say programming has to be done by dealer or automotive lock company. One mentioned that a special scanner is required to reprogram remotes. Called 2 automotive lock companies and they wanted about $200 to program both remotes. Originally dealer wanted $178 each to supply remote and program it. Bought 2 OEM remotes for about $70 after discounts. Called back dealer and got a quote of $62.50 to program both remotes. Will call dealer for appointment next week and confirm quote. Great deal if it’s true. I hope so.

has anybody figured this out yet? really don’t want to spend $70 at a dealership to get this done

Hey guys,
After a lot of research on this problem. i found out that the remote key relearn option can only be done at dealer or automotive locksmith because it requires some special equipment to be programmed.
Jim Makey says
2008 chevy malibu key fob programming alternative.
If your key fob has at least one of the four functions operational, purchase a new key fob (Amazon $10). Open it up into two halves, much like opening a clam shell. Swap the circuit board from the old key fob into the new key fob. Snap it closed, you’ll be amazed how well it performs.

I did what you said and it works like a brand new one! Thanks for the info!
Norm Davis says
Thanks Jim Makey. Yours is the only advice that worked. And it is so simple.
